It’s such a challenge to portray boredom or malaise without mimicking it onscreen, and you did it. Did you feel like this was something you had to grapple with as you were making this? Or perhaps this was simply solved by the short-film format? Can you talk about who/what the titular mother is? Is it a singular object, a feminine force, something to be feared?
We worked with the legendary editor Tariq Anwar, and without a doubt the most challenging portion of the movie to get right in terms of pacing, et cetera, is what I think of as the ennui sequence—that longish montage where nothing is really happening per se, but out of that nothing, a feeling is escalating. Patient and gracious as he was, I’m pretty sure Tariq wanted to murder Morgan and me, so it’s a good thing we were all working remotely. But based on your assessment, all the back-and-forth paid off—so thank you! Mark Adler’s score deserves a lot of credit here too.
